Myah OS 3.0 alpha live CD released
Nov. 01, 2007

Myah OS creator Jeremiah Cheatham has issued the first preliminary release of Myah OS 3.0. The gaming- and multimedia-oriented live CD Linux offering is built with an "efficient" Xfce 4.4.1 desktop, and bundles Internet, office, graphics, development tools, and numerous other applications.

Although Myah specializes in multimedia and and gaming -- "full DVD support" out of the box -- it is also intended to be a full featured distro, with at least one or two applications for every basic need, according to its website. Additionally, Myah's use of Xfce as its desktop environment -- rather than the more common, but bulky, KDE or GNOME desktops -- permits the distribution to run very efficiently, the project claims.

Myah 3.0 currently uses a 2.6.22.10 Linux kernel and primarily targets 686 Intel/AMD PCs. However, it also works with newer 64-bit Intel/AMD PCs, Cheatham said.

This first alpha release has many new features, but it lacks a graphical installer, according to Cheatham. The graphical installer reportedly is currently under construction.

Key packages included in Myah OS 3.0, as listed by Cheatham, include:
  • Linux kernel 2.6.22.10
  • Windowing/graphical environment:
    • Xorg 7.3 X window system
    • Xfce 4.4.1 desktop environment
    • Beryl 0.2.1
  • Browsers:
    • Firefox 2.0+ (with mplayerplug-in, Flash, Java, ChatZilla, fireFTP)
    • Kazehakase (with mplayerplug-in, Flash, Java)
  • Email client -- Thunderbird 2.0+
  • IM/chat clients -- Pidgin, ChatZilla, Xchat
  • Multimedia apps:
    • Video Players -- Mplayer and Xine UI, both "with full DVD support"
    • Audio Players -- Audacious, Exaile, Xfmedia, XMMS
    • Audio/video tools -- Audacity, Kino, Asunder, Audio Tag Tool, Streamtuner, XFCE Mixer
    • CD/DVD burners -- Graveman, Xfburn
  • Graphics editors -- Gimp 2.2.17, plus many others
  • Office apps -- Abiword (word processing), Orage, ePDFViewer, gfa, Gnumeric (spreadsheet)
...and much more.

Cheatham stated, "Myah OS 3.0 also has a broad range of programs included. Everything from Office and Graphic programs to multimedia. This makes Myah OS a complete Linux solution for your PC. Myah 3.0 also comes with its own set of package management tools. These tools are shell based scripts."
