| Ubuntu Linux distros achieve feature-freeze alphas |
Feb. 21, 2006
The fourth alpha release (known as Flight 4) of the upcoming Ubuntu Linux 6.04 "Dapper Drake" is now available for download, the South Africa-based project announced this week. This is the feature-freeze version of Dapper Flight.
Aside from a few exceptions -- such as Gnome 2.14, the LiveCD installer, and Espresso -- most of what is in Dapper now is what will be in the final release in April, the project said.
"Dapper Flight 4 is the product of over three months of tremendous effort," a Ubuntu spokesman said.
Dapper Flight 4 includes many improvements, according to the project, including:- a new graphical installer splash using gfxboot
- a new kernel version (2.6.15) with special builds for various types of servers
- speed improvements all around
- new versions of software, including GIMP 2.2.10, OpenOffice.org 2.0.1, and Thunderbird 1.5.
You can view some screenshots of Dapper Flight 4 here.
Visit the Dapper Flight 4 download page to get your own copy of the .iso; the images range from 615 MB to 641 MB.
Similar Flight 4 releases for Ubuntu's cousins, Kubuntu (which uses KDE), and Edubuntu (customized for educational usage) are also available.
