Microsoft, Google to tangle in LinuxWorld trivia game
Aug. 03, 2005

Two tech giants -- Microsoft and Google -- have clashed head-on in a few arenas recently: over leadership in the Internet search market, over the use of open source software -- even over employees, like Kai-Fu Lee. Now comes the real test of superiority: The Golden Penguin Bowl. The open source trivia contest is set for Aug. 9 at LinuxWorld Conference and Expo in San Francisco. Novell's Jeremy Allison will host the event at 4:30 PM.

Microsoft will address its strategies regarding open source technologies in another venue at LWCE. Bill Hilf, the company's Director of Platform Technology Strategy, will lead a conference session Aug. 10 at 1 PM titled, "Managing Linux in a Mixed Environment . . . at Microsoft? -- A Look Inside the Linux/Open Source Software lab at Microsoft."

For its part, Google's Open Source Programs Manager, Chris DiBona, will participate in a keynote panel Aug. 9 at 2:45 PM titled, "The Explosive Growth of Linux and Open Source -- What Does It All Mean?" This panel will include Open Source Development Labs (OSDL) CEO Stuart Cohen, and representatives from Novell, Red Hat, and the Free Software Foundation.
