| Third v3.5 update edges KDE closer to v4.0 |
Jun. 01, 2006
The KDE Project May 31 released v3.5.3, the third maintenance edition for the latest generation of its popular free desktop for Linux and other UNIXes. New features were implemented due to the lengthy release cycle of KDE 4 -- which is unusual for a maintenance release.
Stability and speed were also improved, along with increasingly complete translations in 65 languages, the project said.
Significant enhancements, according to the project team, include:- KDE startup sequence reordered to improve startup time
- Over 800 minor problems have been fixed thanks to Coverity, as part of a project initiated with funding from the U.S. government
- Small new features were implemented in Akregator, KMail, and KAlarm
This release alters the tradition of limiting "maintenance releases" to bug fixes, the project noted. "Feature freeze" was relaxed somewhat to accommodate qualitative improvements held back by the long release cycle of stable 3.5.x series.
KDE 3.5.3 ships with a basic desktop and 15 other packages -- including PIM, administration, network, edutainment, utilities, multimedia, games, artwork, web development, and others. KDE's "award-winning" tools and applications are available in 65 languages including two new languages, Vietnamese, and Kazakh, the project said.
For a current list of available binary packages of which the KDE Project has been informed, visit the KDE 3.5.3 Info Page.

Availability
KDE, including all its libraries and its application package, is available for free download under open source licenses. The software can be obtained in source and numerous binary formats here, and also can be obtained on CD-ROM or with most of the major Linux/Unix systems shipping today.
The project asks that users testing the release please report all bugs via the KDE bug tracking system.
