VectorLinux releases v5.8 live CD, DVD
May 31, 2007

The VectorLinux team this week released the live CD version of VectorLinux v5.8 Standard and the first alpha of the live CD/DVD edition of v5.8 "SOHO." The Standard edition features a 2.6.18.5 kernel, the SOHO a newer 2.6.20.3 kernel, and both use the KDE 3.5.6 desktop with Kmyfirewall, the team said.

"This is the final release for 5.8 standard GOLD live," team spokesperson Robert Lange said. "The hard drive installer that has been problematic is fixed and should work well. The SOHO 5.8 alpha live comes in either CD or DVD editions. The DVD edition includes all that is in the SOHO 5.8 install release plus 62 additional language packs for KDE."

The CD version has lost some functionality due to size constraints -- the development tool chain and OpenOffice.org have been removed, Lange added. Neither version includes an email client.

Standard features, according to the team, include:
  • amaRok 1.4.5 media player
  • Mplayer 1.0RC1 media player
  • SeaMonkey 1.1.1 web suite
  • GIMP 2.2.14 graphics editor
  • Firefox 2.0.0.3 browser
Vector Linux, whose team is based in Canada, is positioned as a relatively small, fast, Linux operating system for x86-based PCs. According to the project, the distribution offers casual users a fast desktop with graphical programs to handle daily activities such as web surfing, email, chatting (IM, ICQ, IRC, etc.), and running an ftp server.

Additionally, "power user" tools are provided for compiling programs, or for using the system as a server or gateway for home or office networks, according to the project's website.

You can download your own free copy of the Standard (684MB) v5.8 live CD iso image at the team's main download site, here. Alternatively, you can download the Standard live CD image via this direct link.

The v5.8 SOHO (692 MB) live CD image can be found here (direct link to iso). The SOHO live DVD version (1.2 GB) can be obtained here (direct link to iso).
