| Review: Sun's JDS Linux desktop from Walmart.com |
May 17, 2004
The San Jose Mercury News reviews Walmart.com's Linux system running Sun's Java Desktop System (JDS). After putting the high end US $600 PC through the paces, Mike Langberg says the system may not be ideal for the home user, but points out small businesses benefit with this easy to use system without the "expensive license fees" for Microsoft Office. Landberg notes that the system is a "contender" that could impact the price of the Redmond software maker's products.
In 2002, Wal-Mart introduced PCs with Linux preloaded from "white box" manufacturer Microtel The retailer's website also sells the systems with Linux desktop software from Novell's SuSE Linux, Lycoris, Lindows, and Linare. Industry Linux leader Red Hat rolled out Linux PCs early last year in WalMart-backed Sam's Club member warehouses starting at US $300.
