Linspire offers Five-0 "hardware release"
Apr. 24, 2006

Linspire, which has a lot going on this week thanks to the Desktop Linux Summit it is hosting in downtown San Diego, Calif., found time April 24 to announce the release of an update to its Linspire Five-0 Linux distribution, version 5.1.147.

"If you have a perfectly working Linspire Five-0 system and you are happy with it, there is no need to immediately upgrade to this version," company spokesman Kendall Dawson wrote in a Linspire forum. "There are no major new features, and it looks the same as the current version. This is mainly a 'hardware release' to try to fix problems with certain types of hardware."

New features in this include:
  • Upgraded kernel 2.6.14
  • Upgrade to X.Org 6.9.0
  • Replacement of LTorrent with BitTorrent 4.4.0;
  • Addition of Gizmo, a free and easy-to-use Internet phone
  • A large number of new network tool features and supported Windows modems
  • Upgrade to OpenOffice.org 2.0
  • Many bug fixes
"There are no replacement CDs, Developer Editions, or CNR Express CD's available for this version yet. Stay tuned for more info about this," Dawson wrote.

Users who have been experiencing problems trying to get Linspire Five-0 to install on their hardware, Dawson said, are encouraged to check out this updated version. If all the hardware works perfectly, he said, "We encourage you to test the live CD first before installing! When you first boot up, you will have the option to load the live CD or Install. I would encourage you to make sure it works with the live CD first. If you experience problems with it, then please do not do the full install."

Dawson added that users who have Win4Lin working with Linspire Five-0 will not be able to use Win4Lin with the new version.

A more detailed list of changes is available in the release notes. The new build of Linspire Five-0, which serves both as an installation and live CD, is available from the distribution's online store ($49.95). Existing Linspire customers can download the new CD here.
