| CA unveils open source push into enterprise |
May 25, 2004
Computer Associates (CA) is embracing Linux with a series of initiatives and commitment to open-source software. The company announced a plan to open its Ingres database, collaborate with Java server software from JBoss , the Zope Web content management system, and the Plone document management software.
At the company’s annual CAWorld conference in Las Vegas the company unveiled a product strategy called Enterprise Infrastructure Management (EIM). The initiative will enable IT organizations to optimize assets, increase infrastructure performance, ensure enterprise security and business continuity, and help CIOs run IT like a business.
Recognizing the growing number of new technologies that are gaining a foothold in the market as open source software, CA has adopted the Open Innovation Model (as MIT’s Henry W. Chesbrough defined in “The Era of Open Innovation”). The model promotes active sharing, use and support for all available internal and external innovations to create the best possible solutions for customers. CA will co-develop, promote and support existing and new open source projects under this model and serve as a trusted contributor, as well as a powerful advocate for the open source community, according to the company’s statement.
CA said they have contributed Kernel Generalized Event Model (KGEM) software code to the Linux development process, with the hopes it will be incorporated into main tree of the Linux kernel over the next several months. The software improves the security of Linux systems and "feeds performance information" from Linux systems to management systems.
The company also introduced a new open-source license called the CA Trusted Open Source License (CA-TOSL). The CA-TOSL license is derived from the existing Common Public License and CA executives said they plan to gain certification from the Open Source Initiative . The license also addresses indemnification for Linux and will provide legal protection for corporate customers.
"By extending this approach to the open source community, we are fostering open innovation and accelerating the delivery of management software solutions to meet the needs of our customers." said Mark Barrenechea, CA's senior vice president of product development.
CA is a long time supporter of open source foundations and corporations to further foster open source development and innovation. The company is a founding member of the newly announced Plone Foundation, and is an active participant of kernel.org, Open Forum Europe, Open Group, Open Source Development Lab and the Embedded Linux Consortium.
CA's whitepaper, Exploiting the Potential of Linux, goes into detail about the inroads Linux is making in the enterprise. The article also explores how Linux is solving many IT problems and the unique challenges it presents. Download the pdf here. (Note: The paper provides one section on CA's products for Linux.)
