| Summit showcases Linux, open source in San Diego this week |

The 2.5-day Desktop Summit takes place in San Diego, this week. The event will feature informative keynote talks and panel discussions, free giveaways, a product showcase, and a conference-end roast of 2004 Linux and open source headlines by radio host Chris Pirillo, according to event organizers.
Keynote speeches will include an address on Open Source Democracy by Open Source Applications Foundation chair Mitch Kapor, and a talk on the current and future state of digital media by Real Founder and CEO Rob Glaser, among others. (Read this news item for more details.)
"The Linux Desktop is an exciting platform that is creating new growth opportunities for developers of software applications and services. We are eager to see a fully featured player installed on every Linux Desktop so that everyone has access to the rapidly growing world of free and premium digital audio and video on the Internet," Glaser said.
Novell will distribute copies of its Novell Linux Desktop 9 to attendees, and Ted Haeger, Novell's Director of Marketing for Desktop and Collaboration, will be speak about Novell's efforts to enable enterprises to make the shift to Linux.
Michael Robertson, CEO of Linspire and former CEO of MP3.com, will announce MP3tunes during the Summit. MP3tunes will focus on music products and services with an emphasis on the MP3 format to maximize interoperability and consumer choice, and soon introduce a hardware device, software products, and an online music store that will offer music devoid of digital rights management (DRM) controls, it says.
The Desktop Summit will also include a vendor expo, where products from AMD, Novell, Linspire, Sub300, Via Technologies, Win4Lin, GarageGames, SoftMaker, SIPphone, deviantArt, and other Summit sponsors will be showcased.
The Desktop Summit takes place February 9-11 in San Diego. Registration is $99, which includes meals, a free T-shirt, and access to all exhibits and events over the 2.5 day event.
