| Red Hat-based CentOS 5 goes gold |
Apr. 12, 2007
CentOS 5, touted as a "100 percent compatible" rebuild of Red Hat Enterprise Linux, was released today, featuring the GNOME desktop and a 2.6.18 kernel. CentOS targets those who need enterprise-class operating system stability without the cost of certification and support, chief maintainer Karanbir Singh said.
CentOS 5 is in full compliance with Red Hat's redistribution requirements, Singh said. The distro is based on the upstream release 5 and includes packages from all variants, including Server and Client. All upstream repositories have been combined into one, to make it easier for end users to work with, Singh added.
Major changes in CentOS 5 compared to CentOS 4, according to Singh, include: - numerous updated software versions
- better desktop support with Compiz and AIGLX
- virtualization provided by the Xen hypervisor with Virtual Machine Manager and libvirt
- simplified construction of user profiles
Standard features, according to Singh, include:- Pidgin (formerly GAIM) 2.0 beta 5 messenger
- OpenOffice.org 2.0.4
- Thunderbird 1.5.0.10 email client
- GIMP 2.2.13 graphics editor
CentOS is maintained by a community of open source contributors and users. Typical CentOS users are organizations and individuals that do not need strong commercial support in order to achieve successful operation.
CentOS 5 offers individual CD ISO image sets (i386 and x86_64 only), which consist of six or seven CD images, depending upon which version is downloaded. They can be downloaded here.
Alternatively, you can link directly to the complete DVD image (3.5 GB) for i386 machines, here, or for x86_64 machines (4.1GB), here.
