Aug. 11, 2006
[Updated Aug. 17, 2006] -- Ubuntu release manager Colin Watson Aug. 10 announced the availability of Ubuntu 6.06.1, an updated version of Ubuntu that includes more than 300 bug and security fixes for the original "Dapper Drake," released on June 1.
The 6.06.1 Ubuntu version features a 2.6.15 kernel; the next version, currently under development and code-named "Edgy," will come with a 2.6.17 kernel, Ubuntu founder Mark Shuttleworth told DesktopLinux.com.
Ubuntu uses a GNOME desktop environment, while Kubuntu incorporates KDE. Ubuntu and Kubuntu offer GNOME Office and KOffice, respectively, while both also offer OpenOffice.org.
Edubuntu is a separate edition designed for classroom use. All three versions offer optional technical support from parent company Canonical, of Isle of Man, U.K.
"This release includes both installable desktop CDs and alternate text-mode installation CDs for several architectures -- for Ubuntu, Kubuntu, and Edubuntu. Xubuntu (which uses the Xfce desktop) is also included, although commercial support for it is not available from Canonical Ltd.," Watson said in the release announcement.
Some of the key improvements, according to the project team, are:- several fixes to the desktop CD installer
- translations of many packages have been updated, thanks to the Rosetta translation system
- kickstart support fixed to handle disabling the root password correctly
- translations of "Install in text mode" on the CD boot loader now appear
- support added for automatic discovery of SBus devices when installing on SPARC
- most of GNOME 2.14.3 has been incorporated, including a fix for evince's failure to open PDF files on FTP servers
- for KDE dekstops: 32-bit compatibility Qt libraries fixed on amd64 systems.
- KDE: Crash in kde-guidance fixed if a user has no real name set
- for Xfce desktop: Mixer icon fixed
The usual range of Ubuntu products for different architectures can be downloaded free from the distribution's main server or mirrors.
