Kubuntu-based Stagecoach rides into town
May 17, 2007

Technalign on May 16 released the final version of Pioneer Stagecoach, a combined workstation and server Linux distribution based on Kubuntu. The distro sports a 2.6.17 kernel, the KDE 3.5.4 desktop, extensive support for multimedia, and Automatix, which simplifies installation and uninstallation of many popular applications.

Stagecoach represents an alternative for the SOHO (small office/home offce) market with the new workstation/server combination allowing a user to run email, web services via Apache 2, DHCP, and other services while having a full workstation for day-to-day activity, said Techalign CEO Dianne Ursini.

MigrationSERVER on Stagecoach provides access to server functions via the Webmin interface or SSH, Ursini added.

According to Ursini, "With workstation and server hardware becoming more powerful, a workstation and server is now feasible for home or business. As a workstation, Stagecoach provides a standard Pioneer Basic Desktop based on Kubuntu. As a server, Stagecoach provides the full functionality and stability of an enterprise server."

"We are bringing the SOHO, home users -- and workgroups in the enterprise -- a much-needed tool," Ursini added.

SOHO and enterprise server applications, according to Ursini, include:
  • ATLANTIS CRM/Supply Chain Management
  • calendaring
  • backup
  • email
  • Userful Desktop Multiplier
  • accounting applications
Within workgroups, companies using Pioneer Stagecoach Linux can have workgroup email, calendaring, and webpages defining the group all backed up to a central location. Home users can use Stagecoach for family email servers, web servers and other purposes. Combined with the Userful Desktop Multiplier, companies or home users can expand their users up to 10 from 1 from a single workstation, Ursini said.

Standard Pioneer Stagecoach Linux features, which are similar to those in Pioneer Linux 2.0, released in March, are said to include:
  • Firefox 2.0 browser
  • Piding (formerly GAIM) 2.0.0beta3 instant messenger
  • X.org. 7.1 window manager
  • Thunderbird 1.5.0.7 and KMail email clients
  • cdrtools 2.01.01a03 CD burner with CD-R and CD-RW recorder
  • OpenOffice.org 2.0.4 office suite
  • amaroK 1.4.3 media player
Stagecoach comes two ways, according to Ursini: as a freely downloadable live and installation CD; and as several commercial boxed editions that include both Wine and CrossOver Office, as well as full technical support. The latter sell for between $40 and $110.

The free edition can be downloaded here. The 775 MB DVD iso image file for i386 machines is available for download here (direct link to iso).
