| OSDL expands into China |
Aug. 11, 2004
Recognizing China as one of the "fastest-growing markets in the world," the Open Source Development Lab (ODSL) announced today that it is establishing a local office in Beijing. According to the Linux advocacy group, Chinese IT research firm CCID Consulting estimates that the Linux server software market in China will explode at a compound annual growth rate of 49.3 percent over the next five years.
Pledging support for OSDL initiatives that accelerate the adoption of Linux in enterprise computing, Ding Wen Wu, deputy director, Ministry of Information Industry (MII), People's Republic of China, said that his government "consistently drives progress and the advanced use of Linux."
The OSDL says that in selecting Beijing as the location for its first China office, it took into consideration the fact that the Chinese capital houses the headquarters of many key government organizations and the country's top IT firms.
The OSDL formed a Desktop Working Group in January to create a forum where a range of desktop usage models can be studied, resulting in recommendations on improvements to encourage broader adoption of Linux. The charter of the OSDL's Desktop Linux Working Group is to work with the open source community to identify a broad set of Linux desktop models, and then develop specifications and deliver reference implementations.
