| Windows 7 "no threat" to netbook Linux |
Nov. 10, 2008
Linux has nothing to fear from Microsoft operating systems on netbooks, according to one report. The report suggests that XP works poorly on low-powered netbook hardware, with subsequent Microsoft OSes such as Windows 7 likely to be delayed, and even less suited to low-powered hardware.
Published at DesktopLinux sister site Linux-Watch, the story begins:I've been nonplussed the last few weeks as ordinarily sane compu-journalists opine that Windows 7 will somehow kill Linux on netbooks. This weekend, I had a chance to actually see XP running on an EEE 900, and I can tell you, Linux has nothing to fear from Redmond. Henry Kingman, the essay's author, goes on to describe Microsoft's long-standing pattern of responding to market threats with product pre-announcements, rather than actual software shipments. He reports having tried XP on an Asus EEE PC, and found the slowness and bugginess to be too high a price to pay for familiarity.
Meanwhile, Kingman also reports finding one high-profile community-supported Linux distribution for the EEE PC lacking. He suggests netbook buyers opt for a product pre-installed with a version of Linux specifically tailored to netbooks. Click below to read the full story.
