Feb. 18, 2003
Walmart.com is responding to consumer demand for Desktop Linux by now offering Lycoris Linux for retail purchase. Lycoris Desktop/LX is available for around $30, compared to about $100-$120 for Microsoft Windows XP home edition upgrades and full versions.
Walmart.com already offers Microtel PCs preloaded with Linux desktop versions starting at $199 from Lindows, Lycoris, and Mandrake. Earlier this month, Red Hat Linux PCs were rolled out from Wal-Mart-backed Sam's Club member warehouses starting at $299.
Digital cameras maker Vivitar has certified their USB-based cameras on Lycoris, further porof of mainstream device support that are becoming increasing more available and optimized for Linux-powered computers. Vivicam cameras are available at nationwide retailers Wal-Mart and Target.
These developments all reaffirm the emerging trend of businesses, home users and government offices turning to Linux in favor of expensive proprietary computing systems such as Microsoft Windows.
