As planned, Canonical today uncaged release 8.10 of the Ubuntu Linux operating system, codenamed "Intrepid Ibex." The newest Ubuntu release boasts 3G wireless support, "guest" sessions, an integral virtual machine builder, per-user directory encryption, and a "fully-supported" Java stack, among other improvements.

Ubuntu 8.10 will be supported for 18 months, on both desktops and servers. The previous 8.04 (Hardy Heron) release, meanwhile, was a "long-term support" release that will continue to receive security updates and patches throughout the Ibex's lifecycle. However, those wishing to do an in-place upgrade can find instructions here.
Today's release includes desktop and server versions of Ubuntu, along with new releases of:Intrepid Ibex began alpha testing in June, and began beta testing earlier this month. The final release candidate launched last week. In other recent Ubuntu news, Canonical founder and financial supporter Mark Shuttleworth reportedly said today in a conference call with reporters and analysts that the company is not "cash flow positive."
