Xandros bundles NoMachine thin-client server
Jul. 17, 2007

Linux distributor Xandros along with NoMachine, maker of NX virtualization desktop, remote access and server management software, will announce on July 18 that NoMachine's NX Enterprise Server will start shipping immediately with Xandros Server 2.0.

The companies claim that this extended Xandros-NoMachine alliance provides enhanced capabilities for secure and rapid access to graphical applications, running on any operating system across any network connection. The combined Xandros-NoMachine package will enable network administrators to provide rapid application deployment through a single installation on the NX terminal server. After that, employees with access permission can immediately start to use the new applications or a complete thin-client remote desktop.

Xandros has been offering NoMachine's NX thin client for several years now. NoMachine has also made other partnerships over the years to provide thin-client services via application servers.

The partners also state that by keeping corporate data security and the applications on the server this package will enhance application maintenance, data archiving and the securing of sensitive data. NX also maintains that its NX thin clients, which are available for Linux, Solaris, Mac OS X and Windows, use optimized network protocols. This means that even employees on the road with modem connections, like salespeople, can have efficient access to the corporate desktop and applications.

The core NX software is open-sourced under the GPLv2. NoMachine also offers proprietary versions, which include support. In either case, NX uses the X-Window
system for remote desktops. Under that, it tunnels RDP (Remote Desktop Protocol) for Windows Terminal Server sessions or VNC (Virtual Network Computing) sessions for all other operating systems.

To enable decent performance even on slow connections, NX uses data compression for network transmissions and local caching. For security, NX uses the SSH (Secure Shell) protocol to keep these communications secure. In addition to NoMachine's NX offering, there is the completely free, open-source FreeNX server project and another corporate NX implementation by 2X Software, which specializes in Linux-only thin clients.

"We are excited to extend our Xandros alliance to meet the customer need for practical, universal access to a rich set of applications running on diverse platforms," Sarah Dryell, business development manager for Rome-based NoMachine, said in a statement. "Xandros Server is the perfect partner for NoMachine to meet mixed Linux-Windows enterprise requirements for its ease of administration and outstanding cross-platform integration. Together we can deliver an efficient, open and top quality, easy-to-use, corporate-oriented solution."

"Many enterprise customers are implementing thin-client solutions, and we have found that NoMachine's NX Enterprise Server provides an open-source solution with near instantaneous access thanks to its outstanding compression and efficient resource management," Andreas Typaldos, CEO of New York-based Xandros, said in a statement. "Since NoMachine has an impressive list of clients, including Google, Nvidia, Lufthansa Airlines, Harvard and Stanford Universities, and the city of Munich, we are especially excited to be delivering the NX Enterprise Server with our Xandros Server products."
