Jan. 29, 2004
Lineox has announced their new Linux-based distribution built on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3.0. The release, Lineox Enterprise Linux 3.0, contains all freely distributable programs found in Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3.0 AS/ES/WS, Red Hat Cluster Suite, and Red Hat Developer Suite. The release offers customers a low cost enterprise-level Linux operating system without bundled support options.
Company founders develop Linux documentation along with with Linux distributions, as opposed to the typical boxed-set Linux offerings and support-based models in an effort to provide a signifiant cost savings.
As an example, Finland's VAT for books is only 8%, while it is 22% for software. This savings is consistent with European VAT rates. Further, because the release contains all freely distributable packages from Red Hat, significant savings is available to enterprise customers. Estimated costs of Red Hat products, according to Lineox, include Enterprise Linux 3.0 Advanced Server (US $1499), Red Hat Cluster Suite (US $499), and Red Hat Developer Suite (free as an introductory offer for RHEL subscribers). The company does offer a package that includes free software updates for a limited time, and later as a paid subscription.
Lineox Enterprise Linux 3.0 includes OpenOffice.org 1.1.0 for 6 languages, dictionaries, spell checkers, and other support files, along with a large collection of additional third party programs. The distribution supports apt-get, which resolves package dependencies automatically. An online documentation suite, LIFF is available as a standalone product from the company. LIFF can be used as a documentation server or as a DVD-ROM.
Lineox Enterprise Linux 3.0 is now available from he company's website and a number of resellers will be announced shortly, according to a company announcement. Pricing for the DVD-ROM is Euro 17.90 and US $20 SD/Euro for the printed Lineox Enterprise Linux 3.0 Installation Guide.
