Xandros desktop Linux turns 3
Dec. 07, 2004

Xandros has released version 3 of its desktop Linux operating system. Xandros Desktop 3 targets both laptops and PCs and is based a 2.6.9 Linux kernel along with a "Xandros-enhanced" KDE 3.3 application environment. According to Xandros, the Linux desktop features enhanced wireless support, drag-and-drop DVD burning, a Personal Firewall wizard, simple setup and access to virtual private networks (VPNs), and automatic encryption of user home folders. Additionally, users can elect to receive automatic email alerts of Xandros software updates.

Xandros lists the key new features of version 3 as:
  • Drag-and-drop DVD burning in Xandros File Manager
  • Xandros Personal Firewall wizard to guard against Internet intruders
  • Intel Centrino and wireless card support
  • Automatic encryption to protect user files from prying eyes
  • Secure access to a school or business PPTP virtual private network (VPN)
  • Crossover Office 4.1 for running Microsoft Office, Adobe Photoshop, and many other Windows programs
  • Automatic alerts to Xandros Networks updates
According to Xandros, users can drag-and-drop files "from anywhere," including off-system locations such as Windows network shares and FTP sites. Another valuable feature is the Xandros Networks update facility, which is said to offer single-click access to a "huge inventory" of free and commercial Linux software.

Deluxe and Standard editions of the version 3 Xandros Desktop OS are available for purchase and download from the Xandros website and from resellers. Xandros expects to release a version 3 Business Edition, as well as localized versions of the Xandros Desktop OS, in the first quarter of 2005. The Deluxe Edition of Xandros Desktop OS, which lists for $89.95, includes a 380-page user guide and a Xandros Edition of CrossOver Office 4.1. The Standard Edition lists for $49.95.
