| Disc-burning software adds wizard mode |

 Nero AG announced a new version of its Linux CD burning software. Nero Linux 4 now offers a wizard-style UI and support for Musepack and AIFF audio formats, and a "Nero Linux 4 Essentials" application is available separately for OEM partners, says the Karlsbad, Germany-based company.
First released for Linux in 2005, Nero offers audio and data file support as well as options, tools, and settings for burning, copying, and ripping of CDs and DVDs, says the company.
Nero Linux 4 is the only commercial Linux application to offer a "complete solution" for blue laser burning, claims Nero. Blu-ray features include Blu-ray Disc defect management for higher burning speeds, as well as ISO 9660 file system support for the compilation of data discs, says the company. An ISOLinux feature is said to enable the creation of lightweight, bootable discs from CD-ROM.

After installation, users can select either the traditional Nero Linux 4 mode or the new Nero Linux Express 4, which is targeted at less-experienced users (see image above). The wizard-style Express interface offers "easy, guided steps for burning audio and data discs," says Nero.
Nero Linux 4 adds Musepack and AIFF audio support to its previous list of supported formats, including mp3PRO, FLAC, and WAV (see below, left). A new "Nero Linux 4 Essentials" application is available separately for OEM partners, providing development tools for implementing Nero on different platforms.

Pre-existing features are said to include a "SmartDetect" feature for easier automatic drive support set-up, as well as an integrated FreeDB database that provides music collection management service over the Internet. A BD defect management feature, meanwhile, is said to help to verify sectors for cleaner, more accurate burning.

Availability
Nero Linux 4 is available now at a suggested retail price of $25 U.S., for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5, SuSE Linux 10.3, Fedora 7, Debian GNU/Linux 4.0, and Ubuntu 7.04. Nero Linux 4 Essentials is available for Nero OEM partners, says Nero. More information may be found here.
