| First GNOME 2.16-cycle snapshot debuts |
Apr. 28, 2006
GNOME 2.14, the latest fully-released distribution of the GNOME desktop, arrived just last month. Already, however, the GNOME team is hard at work on the upcoming version 2.16. To that end, they released an unstable development snapshot on April 26, GNOME 2.15.1, for testing and bug-identification.
Testers can expect to see a lot of "exciting new features, bugfixes, translations, documentations [in the new development cycle for 2.16]," wrote GNOME developer Vincent Untz in the 2.15.1 release announcement. "Lots of modules have great plans for 2.16, and if you're willing to help, there's a lot of areas where you'll be heartily welcomed! Don't hesitate to ask how or where you can help.
Version 2.15.1, however, comprises mostly bug fixes, cleaned-up code, utility improvements, security upgrades, and other refinements, the team said. No new major applications have been added.
"This is our first development release on our road toward GNOME 2.16.0, which will be released in September 2006," added Untz. "And I can tell you that GNOME 2.15.1 tastes good. Go download it. Go compile it. Go test it. And go hack on it, document it, translate it, fix it."
To compile GNOME 2.15.1, you can use GARNOME (to be released soon, Untz said), or the jhbuild modulesets available here.
"If you don't even know where to start, just send a mail to our GNOME-love mailing list," Untz added.
