| SUSE Linux 10.1 Beta 1 now online and on CD |

SUSE 10.1 Beta 1 is now available online and in CD form and is ready for testing, Novell announced Friday. Four Alpha versions of v10.1 have been made available since version 10.0 was released last October.
Created through the OpenSUSE.org project, SUSE Linux 10.1 targets individuals who want to work with a mature, stabilized Linux operating system, team member Andreas Jaeger said Friday on the SUSE 10.1 webmail list.
The new release supports the Intel and AMD x86 and x86-64 platforms as well as the PowerPC platform, Jaeger said.
As with earlier SUSE Linux releases, version 10.1 offers a comprehensive selection of open source business, productivity and entertainment software from which to choose, Jaeger said.
Among the updates and enhancements included in the 10.1 Beta 1 release are the following:- The core system utilizes the Linux 2.6.15 kernel and comes with CVS versions of glibc 2.4 and GCC 4.1, X.org 6.9, KDE 3.5, GNOME 2.12.2.
- NetworkManager has been integrated. Currently it is enabled by default; with Beta 2, it will be enabled on notebooks only. NetworkManager now supports WPA encryption for WLANs, modems and ISDN; NetworkManager now has native graphical front ends for both the GNOME and KDE desktops.
- Beta 1 comes with the Intrusion Prevention framework AppArmor 2.0.
- Beta 1 includes the latest versions from the Mozilla project: Firefox 1.5 and SeaMonkey 1.0 pre-release.
- The distribution comes via 5 CDs. Only CD1 is needed for a minimal text installation in English; CDs 1-3 are required for a default KDE or GNOME installation in German or English; all CDs are needed for other selections.
