Aug. 12, 2005
Thinkfree showcased a $49.95 multi-platform office suite that claims full compatibility with Microsoft Office formats, at LinuxWorld this week. Thinkfree Office 3 boasts "a Microsoft-like user interface, critical feature support, and seamless interoperation with existing Microsoft Office files." The product was a Best Desktop Product award finalist at the show.
The suite will be offered in versions for Linux, Windows, and Macintosh PCs -- made possible, in large part, by the suite's Java architecture, the company said. A beta version was released last month.
The company lists the following key features of ThinkFree Office 3: - Multi-platform support (Linux, Windows, Macintosh)
- Word processor, spreadsheet, presentation graphics software
- Document viewing compatibility with Microsoft Office
- Cross-platform compatibility (Windows-compatible fonts bundled for Linux & Macintosh platforms)
- Full-featured drawing module for all three applications (ThinkFree Office 3 Write, Calc, and Show)
- Chart module and real-time spell checker
- HTML & PDF export
- XML (WordML and SpreadsheetML) support
- Multi-language support, including English, Spanish, Portuguese, Korean, Japanese and Chinese
ThinkFree Office 3 will work with most computers, according to the company, including those running all Linux Distributions, Macintosh OS X 10.3 and above, and Windows 98/2000/XP. The Linux version will become available for purchase and download for $49.95 from the company's website by the end of August, the company said. Details regarding other versions will also be available at the same location.
