| San Diego firm supports open source apps, offers custom solutions for healthcare and business |
May 17, 2004
San Diego's Union Tribune profiles area Linux advocate and attorney Walt Pennington. The Pennington Firm develops, customizes and supports business applications of open source software as part of their corporate strategy.
Pennington's company customizes an application called Open Source EMR for the healthcare sector to produce and manage electronic medical records. On the cost differential between open source versus proprietary software, Pennington points out that "in some cases, an open-source program can cost more than proprietary software, but it's been customized to meet 100 percent of the business' needs." This advantage can translate into improved efficiency.
Pennington, a member of the San Diego Linux Users Group and tort attorney challenged the legality of OEM agreements last year as he attempted to obtain a refund for an unwanted personal copy of Microsoft Windows that came bundled with a computer he purchased.
His California firm specializes in customizing open source programs for Customer Resource Management (ATCRM), On-line Commerce (OsCommerce), and Accounting (OS Suite).
