| Ubuntu/Kubuntu/Edubuntu Linux 5.10 previews released |
Sep. 13, 2005
The Ubuntu team has released the "preview" of Ubuntu 5.10 (codenamed Breezy Badger), the second Linux distro (after Foresight) to offer the new GNOME 2.12 interface. Additionally, the project released the preview of Kubuntu 5.10, with KDE 3.4.2 as its desktop, and Edubuntu 5.10 -- a version of Ubuntu aimed at classroom use.
All three releases include install CDs and bootable liveCDs.
Ubuntu is a Linux distribution for desktops or servers featuring "a fast and easy install, regular releases, a tight selection of excellent packages installed by default, [and] every other package you can imagine available from the network," developer Matt Zimmerman said. "Also there is a commitment to security updates for 18 months after each release, and professional technical support from many companies around the world."
The final version of Ubuntu 5.10 is expected to be released in October, Zimmerman added. At that time, the company will mail pressed CDs free of charge. An OSDir screenshot of the Ubuntu Linux 5.10 (Colony 4) is available here.
"Ubuntu" is an ancient African word meaning "humanity to others," according to the Ubuntu website.
