| Ubuntu 6.06 arrives on time |
Jun. 01, 2006
The Ubuntu project launched its v6.06 LTS (Long Term Support) versions for desktops and servers June 1, right on schedule, following months of development and testing. In less than two years since its debut, Ubuntu has already become one of the world's most popular Linux distributions.
The launch introduces new functionality with a specific emphasis on the needs of large organizations with both desktop and server versions, the Ubuntu team said. All the new desktop versions -- Ubuntu (GNOME desktop), Kubuntu (KDE), Edubuntu (GNOME), and Xubuntu (Xfce) -- feature a 2.6.15 kernel, three-year security updates, and optional support services from sponsoring company Canonical Ltd.
Included in this release are installation CDs, live CDs, and combination DVDs for i386, PPC, and AMD64 architectures, the team said.
The new Ubuntu 6.06 LTS server version provides an integrated platform for deploying any of the standard Internet services -- mail, web, dns, file serving, and database management, according to the team. Full Ubuntu 6.06 LTS server support will be available for a period of five years from Canonical.
"Ubuntu has a reputation for working well out of the box on desktops, and we have worked to bring that same ease of deployment and configuration to the server marketplace," said Mark Shuttleworth, founder of the Ubuntu project. "Based on our analysis of the ways people were already deploying Ubuntu on servers, we have aimed to streamline their experience while expanding the range of software available to people deploying Ubuntu in the data centre."
As part of the Debian distribution family, Ubuntu has a wide selection of software instantly available to users, and this includes some of the world's best-regarded software for the management of software updates and changes.
"Debian is integral to the success and popularity of Ubuntu," said Ubuntu CTO Matt Zimmerman. "The combined efforts of more than 1,000 developers create a unique platform in Debian, which allows Ubuntu to focus on the specific needs of our users."
The Server Edition of Ubuntu 6.06 LTS includes a mechanism to set up a standardized, certified, and supported LAMP (Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP) server with a single command. The feature greatly reduces the setup time for companies providing hosted LAMP services, as well as making it easier for organizations to set up and maintain their own LAMP-standardized servers, according to the team.
Canonical also provides technical support for the full suite of components in the LAMP stack, it said.
The release of Ubuntu 6.06 LTS follows the recent announcement of collaboration, certification, and support between MySQL and Ubuntu. As announced at the recent MySQL Users Conference in Santa Clara, Calif., Ubuntu 6.06 LTS is a fully supported platform for certified MySQL solutions.
The Ubuntu team also announced a new repository for commercial software that will give users easy access to applications that independent sofware vendors (ISVs) have made available for Ubuntu. A variety of packages are already available, including data management software from Arkeia, cross-platform development tools from Raining Data, PC sharing from Userful, and virtualization from VMware. Additional software for Ubuntu from ISVs will be added in the coming months, the team said.
A special added bonus of Ubuntu 6.06 LTS is the inclusion of free chapters from "The Official Ubuntu Book," which Prentice Hall Professional will publish in July 2006, the team said. The Ubuntu desktop includes Chapter 6, "Support and Typical Ubuntu Problems," which represents the collaborative effort of more than a dozen Ubuntu community members from around the world, in addition to the book's primary authors Benjamin Mako Hill, Jono Bacon, Corey Burger, Jonathan Jessie, and Ivan Krstic.
An additional free sample chapter provides a complete tour of the Ubuntu and Kubuntu desktop environments. To download Chapter 6 directly from the publisher's site, go here.
Ubuntu can be downloaded free of charge here; Kubuntu, Edubuntu, and Ubuntu Server Edition can be found here.
