| REALbasic brings rapid software development to desktop Linux |

Earlier this month, REAL Software released a beta of its latest object-oriented, visual RAD (rapid application development) environment for Linux. Comparable to Microsoft's Visual Basic, royalty-free REALbasic 2005 allows developers to create graphical desktop applications for Linux, and includes a migration tool to port Visual Basic code to REALbasic.
REAL Software expects to release two versions of REALbasic 2005 for Linux -- Standard Edition and Professional Edition -- this August. REALbasic 2005 for Linux Standard Edition boasts:- high compatiblity with Microsoft's Visual Basic
- a utility to migrate existing Visual Basic applications to REALbasic
- the ability to compile to machine code
- REAL SQL Database, a single-user database engine based on SQLite
- low- and high-level networking capabilities (UDP, TCP, HTTP, SMTP, POP3)
- XML parser and generator
- compatibility with major x86 Linux distributions (including SUSE, RedHat, Mandriva)
The beefier REALbasic 2005 for Linux Professional Edition includes all of the above, plus:- the ability to cross compile applications for Windows and Mac OS X platforms
- the ability to creation of console applications
- Server Socket, which enables the creation of powerful server applications
- the ability to create multi-user database applications and connect to Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server, FileMaker Server, MySQL, PostgreSQL, Sybase or any ODBC data source
The REALbasic 2005 for Linux public beta is available now for download. The Standard Edition will be available free of charge, while the Professional Edition will be offered at an introductory price of $399.95 USD -- discounted from the list price of $499.95 USD.
