Turbolinux aims Turbolite 2005 at older PCs
Aug. 11, 2005

Have an older PC and want to upgrade the operating system -- but don't have the horsepower or disk capacity to accommodate the latest versions of Windows or Linux? Turbolinux Inc. today announced an alternative you might want to consider: Turbolite 2005, aimed specifically at used, older, and refurbished PCs.

Turbolinux 10 Desktop forms the foundation of its skinny new sibling. According to the company, Turbolite 2005 offers all the essential functions required for a desktop PC, including a Mozilla Web browser and email client, a Flash player, and streaming multimedia capabilities.

Hardware requirements

Turbolinux lists the following hardware requirements for Turbolite 2005:
  • Notebook PCs
    • Intel Celeron 700 MHz (750 MHz recommended)
    • Memory 64 MB (128 MB recommended)
    • HDD 10GB (15 GB recommended)
  • Desktop PCs
    • Intel Celeron 500 MHz (600 MHz recommended)
    • Memory 64 MB (128 MB recommended)
    • HDD 10 GB (15 GB recommended)
    • More than 256 MB memory recommended for Microsoft Office users

Turbolite becomes the latest Linux distro to announce an offering targeting older PCs and Windows 98 replacement. In June, MEPIS LLC delivered MEPISLite 3.3.1, a lightweight version of SimplyMEPIS 3.3.1 optimized for "modest hardware." Minislack, released in 2004, is another alternative.

In April of this year, writer Michael C. Barnes outlined his strategy in DesktopLinux.com to avoid costly upgrades from Windows 98 to Windows XP -- in terms of both hardware and software -- by upgrading to Linux.

Turbolinux says Turbolite 2005 will be supplied on refurbished PCs by several of its partner companies. A list of Turbolinux partners is available on the company's Web site.
