Dell shipping five Hardy Heron systems

[Updated 3:50] -- Dell is shipping two new laptops with widescreen LCD displays and Ubuntu Hardy Heron (8.04) operating systems with DVD playback. Additionally, the largest U.S. PC maker has started offering Hardy Heron on three models previously available with the earlier Gutsy Gibbon Ubuntu release.

Dell has been installing Ubuntu on select laptop and desktop models for awhile now. The company first announced legal DVD playback under Linux in December of 2007.

New Dell models now available pre-installed with Ubuntu include:
  • Studio 15 -- A mid-priced ($750) widescreen laptop based on an Intel Core 2 Duo T5750 with 2MB of cache, the Studio 15 has a 667MHz FSB, a 15.4-inch 1280x800 display, and a slot-loading DVD+/-R optical drive

  • XPS M1530 -- A higher-end ($1,270) widescreen laptop, the XPS M1530 is based on an Intel Core 2 Duo T5850 with 2MB of cache. It has a 667MHz FSB, a 15.4-inch 1440 x 900 LCD, 2MP webcam, and a slot-loading DVD+/-R optical drive

Systems previously available with Ubuntu 7.10 ("Gutsy Gibbon"), and now available with Ubuntu 8.04 ("Hardy Heron") include:
  • Inspiron 1525N -- A low-cost laptop based on an Intel Pentium dual-core T2370 clocked at 1.73GHz, with a 533MHz front-side bus (FSB) and 1MB cache. The laptop is equipped with a 15.4-inch, 1280x800 display and ships with a DVD+/-RW drive, says Dell.

  • XPS M1330 -- A 4 to 4.8-pound laptop equipped with an Intel Core 2 Duo T5850 clocked at 2.16GHz, with a 667Mhz FSB and 2MB cache. Available in Midnight Blue, Crimson Red, or Tuxedo Black, it offers a 13.3-inch display with 1280x800 resolution, as well as storage options ranging up to 320GB. Additional features include a 2-megapixel webcam and a DVD+/-RW drive.

  • Inspiron 530N -- A low-cost desktop system incorporating a Pentium dual-core E2180 clocked at 2GHz, with an 800MHz FSB and 1MB cache. The system ships with a 19-inch flatscreen SE198WFP display and a 16x DVD+/-RW drive.

Availability

Dell's two new Ubuntu systems are shipping now, priced as follows (including current "Instant Savings" discounts):
  • Studio 15 starts at $750
  • XPS M1530 starts at $1,270
Dell's three older systems newly available with Ubuntu 8.04 start at the following prices (including current "Instant Savings" discounts):
  • Inspiron 1525N ($550)
  • XPS M1330 ($1,000)
  • Inspiron 530N ($460)
