SimplyMEPIS 6.0-1 bootable DVD debuts
Sep. 11, 2006

MEPIS announced on Sept. 9 the release of SimplyMEPIS 6.0-1 DVD Edition. The bootable DVD not only includes hundreds of bug and security fixes but also the 1,900 packages of the three SimplyMEPIS Extras CDs, distro founder and chief maintainer Warren Woodford said.

This latest SimplyMEPIS release is an update of SimplyMEPIS 6.0, MEPIS's first Ubuntu-based edition that was introduced on July 21. It's based on the Dapper LTS package pool, and runs the latest security-patched 2.6.15 kernel from Ubuntu-Security and the KDE desktop as a default, Woodford added.

Featured software, according to Woodford, includes:
  • Kontact 1.2.3 address book
  • Amarok 1.4.1 MP3 player
  • GAIM 1.5.1cvs messaging client
  • OpenOffice 2.0.2 suite
  • Firefox 1.5.0.4 browser
  • Thunderbird 1.5.0.4 email client
SimplyMEPIS 6.0-1 DVD Edition will be distributed in a sealed package on the cover of the October 2006 edition of Linux Magazine, according to Woodford.

"The cover-mounted DVD is convenient for those who do not have the opportunity or inclination to download ISO files and burn their own CDs or DVD," Woodford said. "By featuring our new DVD, Linux Magazine will enable thousands of dissatisfied Windows users to try and, hopefully, switch to SimplyMEPIS."

The issue went on sale Sept. 8 in the U.K. will be available at thousands of bookstores and newstands worldwide -- including Borders, Barnes & Noble, Fry's, Micro Center, Chapters, WHSmith and Eason, Woodford said.

The ISO image is available for download in the "release" subdirectory at the MEPIS Subscriber's Site and at MEPIS public mirrors. Current users of SimplyMEPIS 6.0 do not need to install 6.0-1 but can update, as usual, through the Ubuntu and MEPIS package pools.

Satisfied users are encouraged to help offset the costs of development by making a contribution or a purchase at the MEPIS store here, Woodford suggested.
