First MEPIS 3.4-3 release candidate released
Jan. 17, 2006

The latest SimplyMEPIS release candidate, 3.4-3 RC1, is available for download, MEPIS creator and lead developer Warren Woodford said Saturday. The release is expected to alleviate recent problems with parallel printer compatibility, Woodford said. With this release, the free Linux distribution also moves to KDE 3.4.3 and the newest Firefox 1.5 stable build.

The new release utilizes a 2.6.15 kernel and udev for most hardware autodetection and configuration tasks. Network setup was modified to take advantage of udev event handling. After the final release, the changes in 3.4-3 will be be available in updated MEPIS packages, Woodford said. The kernel was also made more modular so it would be easier to issue updates to drivers, particularly for Intel processors, he added.

"Debian developers have been working very hard to keep up with the rapid changes in Linux technology," Woodford said. "This is a good thing. Our challenge is to keep up with Linux and Debian."

"Debian Unstable is truly unstable and will probably stay that way," Woodford continued. "Users who want their systems to work reliably should steer clear of unstable. If members of the MEPIS community want to install packages from unstable, they are welcome to do so, as long as they realize that by doing so they have become bleeding-edge testers of software that is not yet ready for everyday use. Debian Etch is also changing quickly, but at least it is stable most of the time."

"We've made adjustments to our development process, so MEPIS releases will be easier to manage in the future," Woodford added. "And we think we have found a sweet spot where the core of SimplyMEPIS is synced to Debian Etch and where it is tweaked to just work."

Availability

SimplyMEPIS is available as a free download from public Linux mirrors. Look for MEPIS v3.4-3 rc1 in the testing subdirectory at the MEPIS Subscriber's Site and public mirrors.

For up to seven days, Woodford asks users to please send feedback on MEPIS v3.4-3 rc1 to dev@mepis.org.
