| Tux Paint, Open Source drawing program for kids available |
Jul. 20, 2002
Tux Paint is an Open Source program inspired by the Debian Jr. project. Tux Paint is being created to fill the need for a simple, easy to use drawing program that's fun for kids. While 'The GIMP' remains one of the most masterful Open Source projects out there, it is not the easiest to use - especially for new users and children.
The latest prerelease of Tux Paint (2002.07.19) runs on Linux and Windows, includes a paintbrush tool with numerous brushes, a 'rubber stamp' tool to paste photorealistic images in a drawing, line and shape tools, and a number of 'magic' tools - special effects like blurring, sparkles, mirror-image, and so on. A text tool is coming soon.
Tux Paint includes multiple levels of undo and redo. Saving and opening pictures is done using a very simple thumbnail interface. No '/home/username/' or 'C:\WINDOWS\' involved... just point and click! Many of the dialogs have been translated into Spanish and French.
Tux Paint is being developed by Bill Kendrick of New Breed Software and has recently been accepted into the welcoming arms of Tux4Kids, Debian (Sid branch) and the Debian Jr. projects.
Bill Kendrick is the author of Tux Paint and numerous other Open Source games for Linux.
