The Mandriva Linux team has released the first -- and most likely final -- Mandriva Linux 2006 Release Candidate 1, following three beta editions. The most significant improvement is that RC1 should now boot properly on Intel and AMD dual-core processors, Mandriva said. Other notable upgrades (since both 2005 and earlier 2006 betas) include improvements to the drakroam wireless roaming tool and the new interactive firewall.
The release also has a noticeably faster boot process, Mandriva said. Thanks to the replacement of hotplug with udev functions, all machines now boot faster. Old machines apparently benefit the most, with one user reporting a three-minute reduction in time to boot, the team said.
The release notes provide all the details, including information about fixes to printer drivers, authentication, boot loader, networking, the usual RPM package updates, and rebuilds. Mandriva said 283 bugs have been fixed and that more than 14,000 application packages were rebuilt.
Following the recent transfer of all "Mandrake" domain names to their new owner, some Mandrake Linux users may have experienced some issues with updating their systems. To fix this, Mandriva said, users are asked to update Rpmdrake and MandrakeOnline (if they are using it) as soon as possible with these packages.
Mandrake Linux, created in 1998, has been called Mandriva Linux since its February 2005 merger with Brazil's Conectiva. The releases are distributed by France-based Mandriva SA. Mandriva recently purchased Lycoris, a US Linux desktop distributor.
