"Click-N-Buy" commercial Linux software at Lindows.com
Mar. 13, 2003

Lindows.com has added an a-la-carte option to their licensing structure which will allow individual commercial Linux-based applications to be purchased separately. Called "Click-N-Buy," this program will join the current "Click-N-Run" program that allows customers to purchase Lindows' at one set cost. This new delivery method allows users to customize and purchase software for their LindowsOS PCs from multiple commercial vendors with one click.

Why the change? Lindows' President Kevin Carmony wrote in the company's forum "There are many quality commercial products coming to Linux all the time. Because these are commercial programs and not "free," Lindows.com must pay the software developers for these programs. It would be impossible for us to continually keep adding all the commercial software programs to the Membership program, yet we want LindowsOS users to have access to these programs."

He wrote of the benefits,
"By allowing customer the delivery system we're building has two great advantages for software developers:

1. They don't need to use "activation codes, "unlock CD's," "USB keys," etc. to protect their software from unauthorized distribution.

2. They can offer the full version of their product for a 24-hour trial.

These are two nice things from the user's perspective as well. These are the type of things that are important to provide a secure yet friendly marketplace for Linux software, thus helping to spur on more development.

According to the company's website, Lindows.com will also shortly be introducing a "one-click refund" for 'Click-N-Buy' products. Once introduced, all Click-N-Buy products will come with a 24-hour money-back guarantee. This trial ensures that if don't like a software title, you can simply click a Refund button, the software will be uninstalled, and your credit card refunded for the full amount.

Software available via Click-N-Buy now includes:
  • Sun's StarOffice - $75 Non-Members - $0 Members
  • Bitstream Deluxe Font Pak - $99 Non-Members - $0 Members
