| Chinese vendor readies $187 Linux laptop |
Mar. 22, 2006
A Chinese company better known for its textile products has announced plans to build and market a new Linux-powered laptop computer selling for about 1,500 yuan ($187) starting in May 2006, to take advantage of increasing demand for such computers in China's vast rural areas.
The Menglan Group told Sci-TechToday.com that its computer, called Longmeng (Dragon Dream) will weigh 1.1 pounds and use a Chinese-made Godson II CPU developed by the Institute of Computing Technology.
The company, based in the eastern city of Changshu, aims to sell 100,000 of the laptops this year, it reportedly said. The Longmeng will be marketed for lower-income groups and students in rural areas; it did not indicate which Linux distro it would install.
Zhang Fuxin, an engineer at the Chinese institute, told the publication that "we aren't looking to compete with the mainstream PC brands such as Lenovo and Apple, as we are in a different class altogether."
