MEPIS announces new version, product giveaway
Aug. 08, 2005

MEPIS LLC has announced both a new version and a product giveaway. The latest release of MEPISLite, which debuted earlier this year, is now available for public testing. In addition, the company is joining with SimpleICT.com to stage a $20,000 software giveaway to educators at LinuxWorld in San Francisco.

New MEPISLite available via Web

MEPISLite 3.3.1-2.test02 is now available for download from the MEPIS website and public mirrors. Users should look in the "testing" subdirectory of those sites to find the download. MEPISLite was synchronized with the Debian testing pool on Aug. 1," lead developer Warren Woodford said.

MEPISLite, designed for home users new to Linux, is similar to SimplyMEPIS, except that some packages have been changed to improve performance on "modest hardware," according to Woodford. The most notable change is that OpenOffice is replaced with KOffice. The Firefox browser is included, but Konqueror is recommended. MEPISLite does not have built-in support for AES encryption.

This latest version of MEPISLite includes MEPIS's new Desktop OnTheGo application. With Desktop OnTheGo, a redesigned successor to the MEPIS Traveller Disc, you can take your desktop everywhere a compatible version of Linux is available, including running from CD. "The MEPISLite version of Desktop OnTheGo does not support AES encryption. Desktop OnTheGo is scheduled to be available soon in products from Technalign, SimpleICT, and Forensic Computers," Woodford said.

Woodford requests that users of 3.3.1-2.test02 send feedback to dev@mepis.org for up to 30 days. "'Bleeding edge' users and developers should continue to use SimplyMEPIS; corporate users should contact sales@mepis.com for information about upcoming DCCA-compliant versions of MEPIS," he added.

Giveaway set for LinuxWorld

MEPIS and SimpleICT.com are giving away $20,000 in software at LinuxWorld this week. Visitors to MEPIS's booth (#758) who are wearing an educational badge, or who present an educational organization business card, may pick up a full retail copy of either Simple-Storage or Simple-WebCache, according to MEPIS lead developer Warren Woodford.

Simple-Storage is SimpleICT's alternative to conventional file-saving solutions.

Simple-WebCache is touted as a network Web-caching solution, aimed at schools and small businesses. The software boasts a simple, three-minute-long setup suitable for non-technical staff such as teachers or office managers. Benefits, Woodford says, include faster webpage loading, URL filtering, instant website blocking, and full integration with any network.

Both products are based on the latest SimplyMEPIS operating system, which provides a complete OS and module on one CD, according to Woodford.
