| Project's latest release makes Linux desktop look even more like Windows |
Aug. 23, 2004
The open source project to make Linux look just like Windows XP has completed its desktop environment. According to a post on the group's website, XPde's latest software release now has a Start Menu and, according to the team, this revision "completes the desktop paradigm."

Since its emergence in 2002, the XPde project has strived to "make it easier for Windows XP users to use a Linux box." Releasing a graphical user interface (GUI) that is familiar to users of Windows systems, the project has concentrated its efforts on making the Linux desktop transparent.
While vowing not to ship a complete Windows XP interface clone, the team has strived to make the UI easy to configure for end users. The group's position on the legality and potential consequences of offering a complete version was made available in a 2003 brief (pdf file).
The project has released both a desktop environment (XPde) and a window manager (XPwm) for Linux under the GPL license. The most current software is available here. A detailed set of screenshots is here. Instructions for assembling the components on various Linux distributions and multiple languages are available on the XPde forums.
The project says it will focus on adding capabilities to the desktop as part of its next efforts.
