| FOSDEM attracts 3,000 FOSS folks to Brussels |
Feb. 27, 2006
More than 3,000 FOSS enthusiasts gave up their weekend and traveled from all over the world to attend the sixth annual Free and Open Source Software Developers' European Meeting (FOSDEM) in Brussels last weekend.
Keynote speakers included Richard M. Stallman, director of the Free Software Foundation, who offered insights into the state of software patents and licensing; Kubuntu's Jonathan Riddell; and KDE's Sebastian Kügler.
The international two-day event hosted talks, tutorials, and exhibits for the free / open source software (FOSS) community. The event was organized by volunteers at the Université Libre de Bruxelles in Belgium; access to all parts of FOSDEM were free of charge.
Specifically regarding the Linux desktop, the conference offered several talks and seminars about software that many people are using daily -- Ubuntu and other Linux distributions; OpenOffice.org; and Beagle, a "verifier" tool.
Some good post-event perspectives on the conference can be found at Dot.KDE.org. A (growing) number of photos from the conference can be viewed here.
