May 07, 2004
Linux users now have an Microsoft Excel-compatible spreadsheet program from Germany's Softmaker. The software maker announced a full native Linux office suite in March 2003 and debuted TextMaker for Linux, a Microsoft Word equivalent later that same year.
Softmaker says the Excel replacement supports more than 320 calculation functions and lets users create high-quality Excel-compatible charts. The company has launched a program to let you compare the strength of .XLS import in PlanMaker and OpenOffice here.
All components of SoftMaker Office will be ported to Linux successively said the company in a statment. TextMaker, the word processor, was the first program to be ported. Successive releases include PlanMaker for spreadsheets, DataMaker database, and a document management system that also hosts groupware functions.
Softmaker's word processing component was released last May and is compatible with Microsoft Word 6/95/97/2000/XP files and includes multiple language support. The program, along with dictionaries and thesauri are all available in a wide range of European languages. The software costs about US $50.
PlanMaker is also available for Windows, Pocket PCs, Handheld PCs, and CE.NET powered devices.
A beta of PlanMaker for Linux is now available for download.
