| Red Flag joins OSDL's drive for Linux in China |
Jan. 11, 2005
The leading Linux distributor in China has joined the Open Source Development Labs (OSDL). Red Flag sells embedded, server, desktop, and vertical market Linux stacks, and will contribute to working groups that include Desktop Linux, and Data Center Linux, and Carrier Grade Linux.
According to the OSDL, China is among the world's fastest-growing Linux markets, with Chinese market research firm CCID Consulting forecasting a compound annual growth rate of 50 percent over the next five years. The OSDL opened an office in Beijing in August, 2004.
The state-sponsored Linux software maker responded to the uptake of open source in China's government, education, telecommunications, and financial sectors, and acknowledged a push into the enterprise last year. It joined Oracle, AMD, Dell, HP, Langchao, NEC, and Sun to certify its products and support the adoption of Asianux as a Linux standard in Asia.
In November, Red Flag added the Opera browser to its latest desktop Linux offering.
On joining OSDL, Red Flag's executive president, Chris Zhao, said, "Red Flag is joining the internationally-recognized OSDL organization so that our contributions to Linux and open source development can benefit the global Linux community."
Red Flag's Linux desktop is available for download here.
