| Sun opens 'Looking Glass' for desktops |
Jun. 28, 2004
Sun's highly touted -- and innovative -- Project Looking Glass is going to be available to the open source community as a collaborative project soon, according to a company statement today. The California-based company has not yet disclosed the licensing terms of the technology.
Project Looking Glass was introduced in Summer 2003, and was demonstrated to DesktopLinux.com in a meeting at Sun's offices, at the time. The Project Looking Glass desktop UI offers users a 3D desktop environment with window transparency, rotation, zoom, multiple desktop workspaces and miniaturization. Screenshots of Looking Glass in action are available here.
A Sun announcement at JavaOne in San Francisco today describes the technology as one that helps developers build "highly visual 3D desktops" and applications for the company's Solaris OS and Linux systems including Sun's Java Desktop System (JDS). An upcoming developer's release of Project Looking Glass is expected shortly, according to Sun today.
Features now available in the Project Looking Glass developer's release are described in detail here. Project Looking Glass is part of javadesktop.org, the java.net community for desktop developers.
