| Red Hat to acquire Netscape network security software |
Sep. 30, 2004
Red Hat is acquiring network security software from AOL's Netscape Enterprise Suite, adding it to its Open Source Architecture and distributing it under an open source license. Red Hat's acquisition of the Netscape security solutions assets from AOL is reportedly valued at around US $20M.
Netscape Directory Server is an LDAP server that centralizes management of systems, including application settings, user profiles, group data, policies, and access control information. Netscape Certificate Management System, used by both government agencies and AOL, is said to provide a greater level of security than password-based systems. The framework authenticates the identity of users, ensures privacy, and prevents identity theft, Red Hat says.
Details about the software are available here.
