The XPde team has released a document that discusses the legal impact of releasing Windows "lookalike" user interfaces (UIs) for free software. The group asserts that as long as a UI does not copy unique or distinctive elements in the Windows interface, Linux systems can offer Windows users a familiar desktop that does not infringe on copyrights. This document should not be used as a substitute for obtaining personal legal advice, but offers an overview of the issues, along with the XPde team's assessment.
XPde is a desktop environment and a window manager(XPwm) is available for Linux that is similar to the Microsoft Windows XP interface. The XPde project aims to make Linux more approachable for "mainstream" computer users who are familiar to the Microsoft Windows environment.
