| Ubuntu founder to speak at annual Debian conference |
Jan. 12, 2006
Ubuntu Linux founder Mark Shuttleworth will give the annual report on his hot, Debian-based distro at the 2006 Debian Developers Conference (DebConf), set for May 14 through 22 in Oaxtepec, Mexico.
Ubuntu, which debuted in 2004, was found to be the fastest-growing Linux distro in a recent survey conducted by the Open Source Development Lab. Ubuntu uses a Gnome desktop; Kubuntu (KDE desktop version) and Edubuntu (version for educational purposes) are the other Ubuntu flavors.
Shuttleworth's report is one of about 20 topics that have been accepted for inclusion on the agenda at the eight-day conference. Others include: "OpenSolaris and Debian: Can We Be Friends?", by Sun Microsystems evangelist Simon Phipps and Alvaro Lopez Ortega; "Debian: A Forced To Be Reckoned With", by Benjamin Mako Hill; and "State of the art for Debian i18n/l10n", by Christian Perrier and Javier Fernandez-Sanguino.
A summary of the accepted presentations at the sixth annual conference can be found here.
The conference's target audience is Debian developers and contributors to the project, although Debian users are welcome to attend as well, conference spokeswoman Margarita Manterola said.
Each year, free software developers from more than 30 countries meet at DebConf for intensive development, workshops and seminars to work on the Debian project. Through the talks, demos, coding parties and discussions, the main figures of one of the major GNU/Linux distributions gather to make Debian better, Manterola said.
On May 13, the day before the conference starts, a special event for the general public and the press called "Debian Day" will be held. On this day, several talks will be given -- in English and Spanish --about Debian-related subjects, Manterola said.
DebConf 6 is organized using financial support from Hewlett-Packard Co., Network Appliance Inc., Intel Corp., and Bytemark Hosting.
You can pre-register for DebConf here. A list of registered participants (updated regularly) can be found here.
