| "Easy to use" Linux webserver distro achieves test release |
Jul. 30, 2005
The MEPIS Linux project has begun formal testing of a new version of its operating system, known as MEPIS SoHoServer. The test01 release of SoHoServer, touted as "a general purpose SoHo solution," is now available for download from MEPIS's subscription ftp server.
MEPIS SoHoServer is described a "preinstalled and configured server package" that includes Apache2, PHP4, Perl, Mysql, Proftpd, Bind, DHCPd, Postfix, Dovecot, Shorewall, Squid, DansGuardian, Webmin, and Usermin.
"MEPIS will be seeking Enterprise class certification for SoHoServer," said Warren Woodford, principal MEPIS developer. "We think server farms will find SoHoServer to be a very cost effective alternative to Red Hat Enterprise with C-Panel."
"Like other products that MEPIS offers, SoHoServer is easy to try, easy to install, and easy to use," continued Woodford. "It comes preconfigured with defaults that 'just work' in most situations. Early testers report that even someone with limited server experience can have a MEPIS SoHoServer up and running in as little as fifteen minutes."
SoHoServer will be offered to retail and reseller channels as a boxed and bundled product through Technalign as TaFusion MEPIS MigrationServer, according to Woodford.
"Come see MEPIS at LinuxWorld SF on August 9-11 in booth 758!," Woodford added.
