| Codeweavers serves up Windows apps to Desktop Linux |
Feb. 24, 2003
CodeWeavers and Tarantella announced a joint partnership that will bring hosted Microsoft Windows applications to Linux desktops via a web browser. The collaborative technology not only opens the door to a cost effective solution for Linux-based thin clients to run Windows applications, but also enables access to smaller footprint Internet devices.
Tarantella's Enterprise 3 access software will be offered with CodeWeavers' CrossOver Office Server Edition. A Java-enabled Web browser will allow access to Microsoft Office apps without requiring local Windows installation. The Tarantella/CodeWeavers solution minimizes the bandwidth thin clients require by transmitting changes over the network. Costly software licenses, associated with Microsoft products are also diminished with this approach.
CodeWeavers is the leading corporate backer of The WINE Project, an open source software project that allows Microsoft Windows-based applications to run under Linux. CrossOver Office Server Edition allows users to run a distributed thin-client environment.
