| Lycoris CEO outlines changes in open letter |
Nov. 03, 2004
Lycoris CEO Joseph Cheek has published an open letter to the community and Lycoris customers. Cheek outlines major changes to the company's products and future direction.
Desktop/LX 1.4 is about 85 percent open source from scattered projects on the Internet, about 10 percent Lycoris-developed software, and 5 percent commercial software under license from other companies, according to Cheek. He believes this "is a good mix," that it provides users with significant advantages over 100 percent open source software. Additionally, Cheek expects this formula will work well with the recently acquired SME Server project.
To sustain the business and streamline efforts, Cheek has announced that the company will immediately discontinue development of Lycoris InterConnect and Lycoris Pocket PC Edition, pointing to laggard sales.
Cheek also points to the aging Caldera eDesktop code base in Desktop/LX as one reason that his team found it "difficult to maintain packages and provide true innovation, as maintenance was taking a greater amount of time than should have been necessary."
On more tactical matters, Cheek says Lycoris will reduce its number of remote employees and will no longer accept preorders on products. The company will move order fulfillment back in house, as a result of some issues related to outsourcing the business function earlier this year.
