SearchEnterpriseLinux.com's Amy Kucharik examines the emerging trend of Linux thin-client workstations being deployed in the enterprise globally. Says new Paris-based Microcost CEO Louis Nauges, thin clients cut costs "five to 10 times less than Microsoft including hardware and support costs." According to the article, the terminal-server combination is appearing in the German ministries of the interior and justice, a German life insurance company is using thin clients to access its 390 mainframes, and the town of Schwabisch Hall uses Linux desktops and servers, and is looking at adding thin clients.
Linux thin clients have been making some noise in the US in recent months. Albany-based Lille Corp. made news in November when they led the migration efforts of a local medical facility to Linux thin clients. Dr. Martin Echt, CEO and physician of Capital Cardiology Associates cut his 14 office IT budget by more than 10% to 15% by moving to Linux.
