Dec. 07, 2004
The public Beta of ProMEPIS Linux 2005 is now available for download, test, and evaluation from mirror sites and MEPIS's premium ftp site. ProMEPIS is aimed for enthusiasts, early adapters, and IT professionals, and is intended to be the long term foundation for enterprise and OEM variants of MEPIS Linux, like SphinxOS, MEPIS says.
ProMEPIS 2005 includes both KDE 3.3.1 and GNOME 2.8 core, and comes with OpenOffice suite, Akregator newsreader, Azureus bittorrent client, Firefox browser, Kdar backup, and Kontact PIM with SpamAssassin and Clam AntiVirus.
ProMEPIS 2005 currently uses the 2.6.7 kernel, "due to some hardware support issues in the newer kernels," according to MEPIS. "This is a new build of the 2.6.7 kernel that constains SCSI root, ALSA 1.06a, ISDN support and SELinux hooks. Several new wireless cards are supported out-of-the-box via ndiswrapper. ProMEPIS is pinned to the MEPIS and Debian unstable pools."
In support of "legacy business requirements," ProMEPIS provides support for IBM-5250 and Citrix clients, Knoda database manager, and Wine. Additionally, ProMEPIS supports win4lin and Crossover Office, enabling users to run an assortment of Windows applications on their ProMEPIS desktops.
For developers, ProMEPIS includes Kdevelop3 and the QT development tools. Also, a number of servers are preinstalled including Apache, MySQL, ProFTDd, TFTP, DHCP3, Rsync, Bind9, and eXim4. Note, however, that some of these servers may be removed in the final release of ProMEPIS.
