Puppy 2.14 boasts improved architecture, apps |
Feb. 20, 2007
Founder and chief maintainer Barry Kauler on Feb. 20 announced the release of Puppy Linux 2.14, featuring a 2.6.18.1 kernel and the JWM desktop environment. Kauler said this new edition sports "major improvements" in its architecture and application set.
"This new Puppy has major improvements in the underlying architecture as well as the applications, and some new applets created by Puppy enthusiasts," Kauler said. "Finally we have embraced the XDG menu system, and our new PET package management system is further refined. New applets included are Pfind (file finder) and Grafburn (CD/DVD burner)."
Upgrades are many, Kauler said, including:- Pupctorrent (torrent download client),
- Network Wizard
- Pbcdripper (CD ripper)
- PuppyBackup
- SoxGui (audio file "Swiss army knife")
- mtPaint
Standard features include:- SeaMonkey 1.0.6 communication suite
- GIMP 2.2.11 graphics editor
- Firefox 1.5.0.3 browser
- GAIM 1.5.0 instant messenger
- OpenOffice.org 1.1.5 office suite
Despite Puppy's small footprint (86.5 MB), it is a full-featured Linux distribution. Because the entire OS runs from RAM -- unlike "live CD" distributions that continually read data from the CD -- all applications start quickly and respond to user input "instantly," according to the project.
Puppy Linux has the ability to boot from a flash card or any USB memory device, CD-ROM, Zip disk or LS/120/240 Superdisk, floppy disk, or internal hard drive. It can also use a multisession formatted CD-R/DVD-R to save everything back to the CD/DVD -- with no hard drive required at all.
